Sample collection, step by step

Pick the sample type and walk through the whole procedure, from collection through cartridge assembly to starting the test. Assembly, loading and starting are identical for every sample type; only the first step differs.

Procedure

Sample collection

Reagent preparation takes 40 seconds, loading the sample 5 seconds, setting up the analyser 15 seconds, and then it is 40 minutes of automated analysis. The procedure is the same for every panel; only the first step, the collection itself, differs.

Internal control

Every cartridge carries an internal control that tells you whether the run actually worked. Without it there would be no way to tell a truly negative sample from a failed reaction.

  • Control positive — The results for the other pathogens in the same cartridge are reliable, positive or negative.
  • Control negative, everything else negative — The run in this cartridge failed, the negative results are not reliable and the test needs repeating.
  • Control negative, something else positive — The test is reliable. A positive finding is itself proof that amplification took place.

Cleaning and disinfection

Day-to-day use

  • Change into fresh disposable gloves before assembling cartridges and take care not to spill sample outside the cartridge.
  • After each run, cap the cartridge, put it in a self-sealing bag and dispose of it in the biohazard waste bin. Do not leave waste standing overnight.
  • After a strongly positive sample (Ct ≤ 20), clean the analyser and the area around it with a nucleic-acid removal agent.
  • When you test several times in one day, run the final UV lamp treatment for at least 60 minutes. Ventilating the room helps too.

Routine maintenance

  • Every two weeks, clean the inside of the analyser and its surroundings with a nucleic-acid (DNA/RNA) removal agent.
  • At least once a week, irradiate the inside of the analyser with the UV lamp for 30 minutes or more.
